How To

Big 5 - ElephantSign Up

RemindMe needs your email address, a real email address, that's how it sends your reminders. When you sign up, RemindMe will email you a random password. You need the password in this email to log in (on subsequent visits to the web site).

If you don't get the password after about 10 minutes, check your spam folder, or contact me and I can change your password for you. After you log in the first time, you can set the password to something personal.

RemindMe doesn't let people choose a password when they first sign up. This is to make the sign-up form super-simple, and so I know that the email address is a good one. People who put in a bogus email address simply won't get reminders.

I will never give your email address to anyone for money, fame, favors, spite, or anything.

If you forget password, you can use the reset password form. When you do this, RemindMe resets your password to something completely random and emails the new password to you. When you the the email, come back to the site and log in again. After you log in, you can change the password to ghostpickle or something equally memorable.

Why does RemindMe reset your password? It doesn't know your password. RemindMe uses a gnarly 1-way encryption in the database, which RemindMe can test against when you log in, but not actually read. This is done for reasons of super-security(tm).

Your Reminders

After you log in, you will see a list of your reminders.

Create Reminder

Click the "Add" link above your reminders. The Add Reminder Form will appear. Enter a name for the reminder, like "Mom's Birthday", a month, and day. Click the "Save" button. If there are errors, you will see a message in red. If everything is OK, you will see a message in green.

Edit Reminder

Click the "Edit" link next to your reminder in the list. It looks like a little calendar page with a pencil on top of it. The Edit Reminder Form will appear. Change the name, month, and day to your liking. Click the "Save" button. If there are errors, you will see a message in red. If everything is OK, you will see a message in green.

Delete Reminder

Click the "Delete" link next to your reminder in the list. It looks like a little red circle with a white minus symbol in it. You will be asked to confirm deleting the item.

If you accidentally delete a reminder, contact me and I'll tell you that I cannot help you. Just kidding; I can resurrect the deleted reminder for you. Don't abuse this privilege.

Changing Email

You can change your email at any time. At the bottom of the main Reminders page is a link to change email.

You can change your email to any valid email address that you have access to. RemindMe needs a real email address, that's how RemindMe sends your reminders. I keep repeating this point because it bears repeating.

Changing Password

You can change your password at any time. At the bottom of the main Reminders page is a link to change password.

You can change your password to anything you like. When entering your new password it is not masked on the screen, so you can read it while you type. This means the screen shows what you are typing instead of *******. Make sure no one is reading over your shoulder when you choose a new password. In fact, check over your shoulder frequently.

Toronto elephantThe Reminders

Where ya coming from?

RemindMe emails are sent from:  remindme at weblacarte dot com - and have the subject "[remindme] Reminders" (without the quotes). If the reminders are ending up in your Bulk or Spam folder, try adding this address to your address book.

Reminder Frequency

By default reminders are sent the week before, the day before, and the day of the reminder. To change this use the "Email me" form at the bottom of the main reminders page. Check or uncheck your choices and click "Change". Your selections here will apply to all your reminders.

Pause Reminders

If you want to go build an orphanage in Uganda, and don't want a ton of emails when you get back, you can pause your reminders. At the bottom of the main Reminders page is a link to pause your reminders. All your reminders will be safe. RemindMe will simply stop emailing you. You can come back to the site at any time and tell RemindMe to resume your reminders.

Alternatively, it may be cool to leave your reminders on to see who's birthdays you missed when you get back.

Compatibility

Browsers

The RemindMe web site works best with modern web browsers that support Web Standards, JavaScript, and Style Sheets. It has been tested on Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 1.5 on Windows XP. Screen shots of problems from other browsers and platforms are welcome. Please consider using Firefox!

Email Clients

RemindMe sends boring text emails that work with any email client.

Internationalization

Unicode

RemindMe has lousy support for unicode or right-to-left languages. Please try to keep the text you enter for reminders simple.

Other Languages

The RemindMe web site and email reminders are currently only available in English. Translations are welcome, but not paid for. None are currently planned.
